D. Annette Ball is a lifelong New Mexican artist based in Corrales. Her work begins with quiet observation: light moving across a landscape, the gesture of a bird, the changing character of a flower, or a familiar place briefly becoming unfamiliar.
Working in photography, digital art, mixed media collage, and painting, she explores the meeting of the visible world and the imagination. She describes her evolving practice as digital improvisation—an intuitive process of transforming photographic images through color, texture, layering, and painterly experimentation. Her intentional camera movement photography introduces another dimension, allowing motion and light to shape the image at the moment of capture.
The resulting works move between recognizable subjects and abstraction. Some hold the stillness of a remembered place; others suggest movement, mystery, or an emerging story. Throughout her practice, light is both a subject and a means of discovery.
Her collections include Albuquerque Light Spaces, Ravens Roost, and SpiritWorks. Across these bodies of work, she invites viewers to form their own relationships with an image—to notice what it reveals, what it recalls, and what continues to speak over time.
Ball’s creative background includes work in the New Mexico State University Graphics Department and freelance design and film projects for nonprofit organizations. Alongside her artistic practice, she has spent more than three decades working in healthcare consulting, administration, and health policy. These experiences inform her interest in how art can support reflection, connection, and a sense of place.
As the founder of Generations SpiritWorks Creative, she brings this perspective to the gallery: each creative work carries an identity and a story, and finding a home for it is part of its continuing life.
